GLP-1 vs wegovy
You are deciding between two options.
Reference and calculator, not medical advice. Dosing figures below are transcribed from FDA-approved prescribing information and link back to it. Last reviewed August 2026.
Wegovy is a GLP-1 medication. It is semaglutide, branded for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction, and its label describes it plainly as "a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist".
One thing that has changed and catches people out: Wegovy is no longer only an injection. The same label now covers a tablet presentation, so "Wegovy" refers to two different products with completely different dosing.
Side-by-side
Structural facts from each product’s prescribing information.
| Product | Active ingredient | Indication | Frequency | Start | Max labelled | Steps to max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy Novo Nordisk | Semaglutide | Weight management | Weekly | 0.25 mg | 2.4 mg | 5 |
| Wegovy tablets Novo Nordisk | Semaglutide (oral) | Weight management | Daily | 1.5 mg | 25 mg | 4 |
| Ozempic Novo Nordisk | Semaglutide | Type 2 diabetes | Weekly | 0.25 mg | 2 mg | 4 |
Semaglutide is described in the label as a GLP-1 analogue with 94% sequence homology to human GLP-1 — close enough to activate the same receptor, modified enough to last far longer in the body than the natural hormone.

Common questions
- Wegovy or Ozempic — what is the difference?
- Same active ingredient, semaglutide. Wegovy is labelled for weight management and cardiovascular risk reduction; Ozempic for type 2 diabetes. The maximum labelled injection doses differ.
- Should I take the injection or the tablets?
- A prescriber decision. The label does say the two should not be used together, or alongside any other GLP-1 receptor agonist.
